The insignificance of now
One human lifetime, a twinkle of light

Emerging from the cave and gazing up into the open sky
Prehistoric man, he wonders why he can’t fly
I'm dreaming, effortlessly floating in the air
I think I'd like to see what's over there
But as I'm turning to leave I realize that gravity's holding me back
Upset the balance, alter the course
Ultimate outcome unclear
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
Perhaps the answer is near
One small blue planet, the cradle of life
Sometimes we feel so all alone
Precious and fragile, adrift in the void
The only home we've ever known
And billions of machines belching noxious gasses to the sky
Has anyone considered how or why planets die
I'm dreaming - I must be dreaming once again
I think I'd like to see the master plan
But it's eluding us still, just like it has

Found a box of old magazines and I began flipping through
Stopped to read an interesting article written in 1972
It was based on the findings of a study of the pollution rates
Of the three major rivers that run through the north-eastern States
And the startling conclusion, it just left me shaking my head
That every single life form in the whole North Atlantic would be dead
Within fifty years time
And if we can trust the numbers
And if the facts are verified
And if we still ignore the warnings
This is global genocide
As if we’re waiting for something or someone to make it all right
And just like magic these problems will all disappear overnight
As we explore new horizons this is the baggage we take
Into environments far less forgiving, no room for mistake
If we hope to survive

"Diatoms are tiny one-celled organisms that live in the surface layer of the oceans and other bodies of water. Through photosynthesis they consume carbon dioxide and produce up to two thirds of the oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere. Our research concludes that the number of diatoms in the North Atlantic Ocean is declining at an alarming rate as a result of toxins and other pollutants being dumped into it via the Hudson, Delaware and Potomac rivers. This is but one of many regions of the planet where this is happening. On a global scale, the destruction of diatoms combined with the destruction of the forests could result in serious ramifications for life on Earth as we know it."

A man will tend to think irrationally
More acts of violence, an increase in crime
These are the symptoms, a sign of the times

How many tragedies to change our attitude

In number-four reactor, the core has melted down
Radio active fallout spreading all around
Poison lands and poison in the air

I see the polar ice caps melt into the sea
I see the waters rising undeniably
People in coastal lowlands flee to higher ground
Massive destructive forces witnessed all around

And generations yet to come
We’re so preoccupied with wealth and power
Where do these attitudes come from?
Writing our legacy, we will be judged
By the choices we made in our time
In a recurring dream I saw a vision
Of what the future held for me
And it would lead me to a life decision
Of what my purpose in this world would be
History shows us again and again
We can do anything if we try

Now we’re wasting time can’t you see
We can go and tap the vast resources out in space
Knowledge we can use to make our world a better place
Have you heard the work has begun
They’ve decided to build Island One
And so the plans were drawn and contracts tendered
There is much that must be done
My firm was chosen as a software vendor
And I am bound for Island One
During construction I completed training
And I’m ready for the show
Although quite arduous I’m not complaining

A dream became just one small step for a man
All we have learned from our excursions in space
Secures the future for the human race
All of these dreams will soon be realized
Even better than we visualized

We’re fast approaching Habitation Day
Working toward this for many long years
Thousands have given their blood, sweat and tears
There have been setbacks but we overcame
And now our lives will never be the same
And from the Island One Consortium
A promise that the best is yet to come
Our dedication is going to pay
When we arrive at Habitation Day
Biding my time at the departure gate
Not much to do but sit and patiently wait
Passion for knowledge and the will to survive
The catalyst to keep the dream alive
And once we’re seated and securely strapped in
We’ll feel the thunder as the engines kick in
And then at last we will be on our way
